Lyric Chat: Colin Hay – Waiting For My Real Life To Begin

Hello again! Good to be back. I really appreciate the feedback I’m getting on the site–it means a great deal to me. When I first started indiemuse.com, I wrote up a “mission statement” explaining what I would like to accomplish with the site. I felt then, and still feel that the community is just as important as the music. Just like you are hopefully discovering some music from this site, I realize I would never be able to run indiemuse if it wasn’t for the community–radio stations, websites, magazines… Even You!

Therefore, I would like to discuss some music and hear your thoughts on it. To start out, I am going to post a song with lyrics that have had significant meaning to me. I feel that the lyrics represent most human beings, some more than others, at different times in our lives. To me, the song represents making the most of the present, because we never know what the future has in store.

Consider taking the time to listen to and read the lyrics (the link below will open the song in a new window so you can see lyrics at same time). You are a part of the community, and I think it would be fun to see what the song means to you and your life. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate…just drop a line if you like the song.

Also please, please let me know of songs with lyrics that have had an impact on you. I would love to hear them, and will definitely post some of the songs.

Colin Hay – Waiting For My Real Life To Begin

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I’ll keep checking the horizon
I’ll stand on the bow, feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down, down, down, on me

And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart
Let the light shine in
But don’t you understand
I already have a plan
I’m waiting for my real life to begin

When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams, I slew the dragon
And down this beaten path, and up this cobbled lane
I’m walking in my old footsteps, once again
And you say, just be here now
Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin
Let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I’m waiting for my real life to begin

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I’ll keep checking the horizon
And I’ll check my machine, there’s sure to be that call
It’s gonna happen soon, soon, soon
It’s just that times are lean

And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine in
Don’t you understand
I already have a plan
I’m waiting for my real life to begin

  1. Yeah, this is an amazing suttle song, and great lyrics; and I’ll agree with the very “Carpe Diem”ish way about it, and born in the same spirit as Robert Frost’s “The Road not Taken. Colin Hay has definately come a long way since Down Under :D
First stumbled along these lyrics in an Scrubs episode, where the cast is performing a more ‘musical’ly version of this. A lot of music I have discovered through there, and this one in particular was fantastic.
And finally; I am real sorry for your loss; death is always to sudden; and I cencearly hope U all make the best of it.
    Have a nice weekend…

  2. That’s a really great song, and it has some very cool lyrics. Anyways, great site Dave and keep up the good work.

  3. yea. I agree. Thy lyrics are quite compelling. I gotta hear the actual sound along with it. I would also like to take this time to point out that Peter Monroe can leave a reply, but I cant….. well anyways, keep up the great site!

  4. In case you didn’t see it, there is a link to the song above the lyrics… Brian, I didn’t realize they did this song on Scrubs. I know that they’ve featured some of Colin Hays songs on the show, and I heard he guest starred on an episode, but that’s really cool that the cast sang a musical version of it. I’ll have to check it out, thanks for letting me know!

  5. i am using this song at my mums funeral 2moro. Its a lovely song, i feel, about waiting for peace and freedom of suffering. Its not death…just waiting for ur real life to begin, forgetting about the past. My mum died due to alcoholism and this song feels like it fits, about her ‘slaying the dragon’ and forgetting about the past. I love this song and the minute i heard it i knew it was the song i wanted. It brings tears to my eyes.

  6. Yes, you must sley the dragon, and open your heart and let the Master in, and accept Him, only then will you know true joy. When you have faith and belief, and love, you have it all my friend, you have it all. Keep on keeping on, and remember the things that are real you can never buy but when you die you take them with you, all the riches of Heaven. God Bless Dude.

  8. My wife and I just heard this song used on a new A&E show called “The Cleaner” and it knocked us on our collective ass. I recognized Colins voice immediately but had to run to the computer and validate. For those of you that appreciate songs like this that have such a spiritual impact check out a number from waaayyyy back on Bad Co’s first album titled “Seagul”, “One Tree Hill” by U2 from The Joshua Tree album and a song I just heard Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend perform last week at UCLA. I didnt catch the name but it is the last piece they sang on the VH1 rock honors for The Who. Peace!

  9. I heard this song on a commercial a while back and just now found out who did it and the title and such. It is a beautiful song that has a prism effect of meanings, obviously by so many people who identify with the lyrics in different ways. Me, I wondered why it appealed to me because I am at a point I wanted to be in life. I am happy, great famly, great job, great everything. But, why does this man’s longing appeal to me? I feared if my wife knew how much I like the song and plan to learn to play it, she would think thee is something is lacking. The truth is, what the man is saying, outside his own self, is that he keeps looking out for what he thinks is coming his way in life, when he always has it if he would just look around. John Lennon said it well, “Life is what happens to you while you’re making other plans”. Anyway, that’s my take on it. It is so well done. Oh, this is also the theme of The Wizard of Oz, too, isn’t it?

  10. So many people are on the cusp of a new way of life. Whether it be a new job, new love, or just a new way of looking at the world around us. Some are ready to jump. Some are waiting for the “right time” Time waits for no one Seize every opportunity.

  11. This is a song about a man who longs for fame and fortune, who is unsatisfied with what he sees as mediocrity and longs for something better. This ambition is common enough, particularly in a younger man. What makes the song piquant and touching is the viewpoint of his wife/girlfriend. She sees that he is unhappy, and wants to comfort him. She wants to convey that she loves him just as he is. But he rejects this comfort; he is more concerned with his pursuit of personal glory; he does not acknowledge or return her love. He only looks forward to a brighter future, but I suspect it is a future without her.

I find the song sad not because the man has not achieved his ambitions of fame. I think he has achieved at least some of his ambitions; he is looking back at the love he lost because he could not accept it before he found his fame, lacked the perspective required to value the love. I think it is a song of an older man looking back on his younger days with regret.

  12. I have had this song on my iPod for years and never really thought about it until last February when my sister passed from colon cancer. I always thought that it was talking about the afterlife. and now we’re just here for a short time but our life really begins after death. a few months later my mom passed after a long bout with illness.I love listening to the song because it brings back memories of them and gives me great comfort and believing in the fact that they are enjoying the real life now.

  13. When we are waiting for our real life to begin we paradoxically miss the wonderful life we have been given, right here, right now. Today is yesterday’s tomorrow. The precious present is all we have, abundant and whole. Don’t wait, live each breath as though it were your last. Blessings!
BTW The dragon is illusional. We make it real out of fear. Fear not for I AM!

  14. I feel this song is in split dimension or even split metaphor. On the one hand – my mind is with a water scene and I feel the Robert frost “two roads split” vibe and then I am brought back to checking the voice machine. It feels to me like a good song that is an unfinished great song.

  15. Unhand me now, you Jezebel, traitor to the heart
Of compassion, I shall give you none; my ways with you I part.
Born side by side, my rival sprang – fruit of likened loin
I give to you your hearts content – my rival bears but coin
Enough to pay for food and rent – but the cost… a soul purloined.

Written at 16 – idealistic and artsy/fartsy….probably a liberal democrat in the making if we are playing to stereotypes

In the 80sv- we had double digit interest loans and I dumped an arts/science path for accounting.

40 years later – at 54, I can’t even remember how it is that I spent hours in make believe with my sisters and sometimes just by myself playing Barbies.

    What life was real?

  16. I think circumstances can dictate you interpretation of the song. For me the lyrics hold a hopeful meaning. My Daughter was a survivor from one of the classrooms that were shot up in the Marjory Stoneman Douglass Shooting on 2/14/18. Now, 8 months as we continue to deal from the ramifications, the PTSD, depression, anxiety for her there is an interesting dynamic that the lyrics synchronize with.

Right now she can’t even go to school, has days she can barely get out of bed. Yet daughter, has an overall optimistic view that she will go to college, do all the normal things that were planned before that day.

So I chose to see the some optimism and hope in the lyrics and singers voice of better days, that right now what she is going through is not her real life, and she is waiting for her real life to begin again.

  17. Any song with a Don Quijote reference has to be taken seriously
As I get closer to my 60’s this song makes me reflect on the paths that I have taken and not being satisfied
