About A Boy OST

The 2002 film About A Boy has a great soundtrack composed by the Badly Drawn Boy’s Damon Gough. It’s by far the most rewarding aspect of the movie, and “Something to Talk About” and “Silent Sigh” have been among my favorites songs over the past several years. I just saw parts of the film on TNT the other night, and it made me realize I had to feature this overlooked soundtrack. I am a big fan of composers who are able to successfully capture the mood of a movie, such as DeVotchKa with Little Miss Sunshine and Yann Tierson with Goodbye Lenin! Thoughtful compositions have the ability to bring a movie to life, and at the very least make a Huge Grant movie bearable.

So, what’s your favorite movie composition? Is it Jonny Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood? Or perhaps The Motorcycle Diaries OST? Let me know.

  1. Great songs, but, Your Hugh Grant hate is keeping you from enjoying a very good movie.

  2. Matt, I was just kidding about the Huge Grant thing; while he hasn’t been in a movie that I have loved, I have no beef with him. As for About A Boy, it’s an okay film. I enjoyed watching it, but it’s far from being a favorite of mine. I still think the music was by far the best part of the movie. Thanks for the message.

  3. My favorite OST would have to be the wonderful sounds of the often overlooked zither done for The Third Man. It makes that movie not seem 60 years old.

  4. Ah, yes, Eternal Sunshine has a great soundtrack. I love Jon Brion. I Heart Huckabees is fantastic too. Both are also among my favorite movies.

  5. Thanks for drawing attention to this soundtrack (6 years later haha). But I completely agree with you in terms of the quality–it happens to be a favorite movie of mine, but really I think above all the soundtrack helped largely to carry the film, and alerted me to the existence of a quiet, unique and previously unheard sound in ‘Badly Drawn Boy.’ I bought this cd a few years ago and to this day I never get tired of it, especially “Silent Sigh,” “Something to Talk About,” and “A Minor Incident” (which supposedly is the suicide letter that the boy’s mom wrote but somehow they turn it into such a happy tune!). Oh, and I have the book too, I’d suggest reading it, it’s hilarious and much better than the film. Anyways, kudos : )

  6. in agreement with mary kate – juno is fantastic. but i’ve always liked kimya dawson, B&S, etc., so i was biased…

goodbye lenin! is also one of my favourite films, and the soundtrack also carries some of the responsibility for that (ditto Amelie – i love tierson)

Après Vous also springs to mind, though i’ve gone blank on who produced the music for it.

  7. My favorite Yann Tierson soundtrack is from the french film Amelie. It’s a really wonderful movie and the soundtrack is mostly classical and almost magical. You should watch it. ^-^
